5/17 The Garden

The name of the Palace is Achillion. Queen Elizabeth, of Austria, named it after Achilles.
She installed many statues around the grounds.

Sissi had many bathtubs around the garden. You see one against the wall. She liked to bathe out in the open

The village in the foreground is modern. The one in the distance, under the mountain, is old.

The design of the garden does not seem sophisticated but the view of Corfu in the near distance is, forgive the cliche, breathtaking. There were images on display in the museum of the garden when it was new in 1892. NO Trees. An incredible difference when it was just an open plain that one walked around to look "down" on the world. The house is over 80,000 square feet and the grounds are acres and acres.

Downtown Corfu is center right. On the right a large ferry is going to Italy.

On the far right are the two "humps" of the old fort. In the center is the old harbor, from 400-500 BC. It is now to shallow for use and the airport, the white strip is there.

On the mountain, about 30km away. you see a horizontal strip. That is the village, along the road, where we went to the Panorama Cafe

How would you like to step out of your bedroom on to this size porch -- and with the view.

I have to sign off now. Student crits. The good part is that they take place at a cafe, not in a classroom.
I am going to miss the evening light.
