5/12, A trip into the hills

The beginning of breakfast before we go in the car up into the hills.

Back from the Excursion

Maria collecting the flowers she put in the vase when we got back.
And behind my back, while snapping her, a castle built in 1270, over two centuries before Columbus headed out for the Orient.

(I am now two days behind in posting, so here is some catching up. I will start with the trip we took into the hills I alluded to above.Tomorrow is tomorrow. That might be it for a while as there are three more student crits for sure and maybe a fourth)

We're leaving the parking "spot" and heading out.

Whatever your preference, Greece will have the color.

We arrive, over 30km out of Corfu. The street in the village is narrow so one parks close to the wall.

First view back to the city. "So far away".

My opening tourist picture of the day.

Maria talks to the grandfather of the owner of where we are going, "The Panorama Bar".

We go in. You can see Maria to the left. Above the couple's head is the mainland. The two "bumps" to the right of the island in the center are the Old Fort in Corfu.

Part of the village from the porch.

Looking past the home in the lower right corner of the image above to the sea.

With the telephoto you can see the left of the island, the two towers of the fort and a cruise ship leaving. 30km by car.

Maria tells me that what is called Greek coffee is really Turkish coffee. The mud in the bottom are the coffee grounds that are not filtered. You can turn the cup upside down and they will not slide out.

In honor of Kara I had cold French coffee with foamed fresh milk.

On the road again to the famous castle.

Through villages.

Light

Through a village that used to be a desired vacation destination for
the "Royalty of Europe" in the 19th and 20th Centuries.

Aggelokastro Castle, "Angel's Castle. As I said, built in 1270.
See the gate in the center of the wall. The new looking building is contemporary.

Someone's place to the right looking at the base of the castle hill on the left.

On the way back. An olive grove that is over 500 years old. Antonious said it was in bad shape because they had let the trees grow so tall. They should have been continually pruned over the years.

The economy. An abandoned, unfinished home

A road side memorial marker for an accidental death.

Dusk is falling. We stopped at the Super Market where I was forbidden from taking pictures by the manager. "This is private property".

The birds circle over the city as we walk up to home.

"PS"
Having fun doing traditional light.

Still number three from my Hollywood epic, "Corfu Thriller".

Kaispera for now.

  1. Once again, thank you Vern for taking us with you. I have so many questions! I think you said Antonious was your student at Purdue... How did he end up going to school in Indiana? Did you know Maria before this trip? The "140 green" car in front of the apricot building is great!
